Elks Travel 'N Fun July Report

(If you find any typos please let me know.  I looked at June and found too many. Thanks.)

Congratulations to the Lodge 1181 Ritual Team for another first at State (and its All-State winners,  and the best of luck at Nationals.

Be careful what you say.  Last month, I wrote, "Travel and Fun trekked to Ellensburg in search of spring warmth  the West Side like March instead of May."  With strong winds and snow only a few miles up the road, Ellensburg was more West Side than the warm desert we expected.  Holiboards were rained out but we had fun regardless.

The outing was hosted May 15 to 18 at E and J Resorts by Wayne and Vivian Bernard and Keith, Liz and Jack Brown with able assistance from Keith's quests, the Richard family - Dean, Melanie, Bryanna & Carissa.  Campers enjoyed the Western art Show, Farmer's Market and many rounds of Push Poker.  (If we've added right, Stella Davis paid for night's camping with her winnings.)  The hosts overcame electrical problems in the clubhouse and provided campers with two breakfasts and a truly outstanding Western BBQ  brisket, ribs, beans, homemade slaw and potato salad, and Vivian's desert.

For your cooking pleasure, Keith's Cajun Magic Beef Rub recipe:  1 1/4 tsp Salt, 1 tsp Paprika, 1 tsp Onion Powder, 1/2 tsp Thyme, 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder, 1/2 tsp Dry Mustard, 1/2 tsp Cumin, 1/2 tsp Ground Red Pepper,  1/2 tsp Ground White Pepper, 1/2 tsp Ground Black Pepper, 1/4 tsp Ground Bay Leaf   (I just buy whole Bay Leaf and put it in my chopper until it's chopped fine.)

Chris has successfully used the beef rub on chicken, but there is also a Cajun Magic Chicken Rub:  1tsp salt; 1/2tsp Thyme; 1/4 tsp each onion powder, rubbed sage, black pepper, white pepper; and pinch of red pepper.

Keith is now retired from the navy and the family will soon head to Louisiana.  Good luck, guys.  We will miss you.

June 12 to 15, an intrepid band of campers traveled to  Kamper's West at Warrenton, OR for an Explore and Shop Till You Drop Weekend.  Hosts Bill and Juanita Spong provided a laid back weekend planned  but not without games.  Friday, there was a continental breakfast, with dinner potluck followed by Juanita's Brown Bag Dice.   Saturday, the hosts cooked breakfast. Saturday, Bill judged a hors d'oeurves contest during happy hour.
Dinner was BBQ.

About the time this issue of the Reminder is delivered we will be at the Northwest Elk's RV Rally at Elma, July 3rd to 6th.  Merle Lewis and Lorene Brannan will host.  Travel and Fun's Jime and Peggy Brooks will host washu and sandbag games during the rally.

August 14-17 we will be at Pacific-Aire in Westport hosted by the Brooks, Gertschs and Buetgenbachs; September 11-14 at Rest-a-Wile hosted by the Sandes and Rotts; and October 16-19 at Midway in Centralia or the Officer's outing.  We hope to see you there.
