Travel N Fun column for May 2004Reminder

Our sympathies go out to family and friends of past members Darlene Hill, Dick Irwin and Earl Lawrence for their loss.

As we reported last month, March 18 - 20, the club traveled to the Outback RV Park at Rochester for a weekend of music, food and fun.  The hosts, Bud and Lorraine Maves and Bud and Lou Turner, provided two breakfasts (quiche and hotcakes) and a stew dinner with crusty bread and Lou's special layered desert (in two flavors).  Campers enjoyed the Tenino Old Time Music Festival and puzzled over Lorraine's brain teasers.  The winners of the Big Brain trophy were Chris and Gary Blankenship.  But their brains are not all that big; they only got two of the ten teasers correct.

The club provided a shower gift to the Rott's for their new baby, "Corky," weighing all of one pound.

And thanks from the hosts (and ours to them) for help in the kitchen from the Greens and senior Gertschs.

April 15-17 we stayed in the home park for a weekend of camping at the best BPOE park in the nation.  In addition to the usual weekend of games and food, the hosts - Jim and Peggy Brooks, Dave and Judy Gertsch, Carl and Elaine Buettgenbach and Darwin and Gloria Gilchrist - planned a rousing session of "Left/Right/Center" for Friday and a rainy day group game for after the host-provided dinner Saturday.

May 13-16, hosts Dan and Margie, Frank and Bonnie Seevers and Norm and Marlene Savage take us to the Port Townsend Elks, always a fun place for an outing and Randall's great Friday night buffet at the 317 lodge.

June 17-20 will find us at Swiss Colony Park in Lebam, one of our favorite destinations, for a joint campout with the Port Townsend Elks Wapiti Nomad RV Club.  Our hosts will be the Sande's and Rotts.

July 15-18, we travel to Hood River for the NW Elks Rally, our campsite hosted by Wayne and Vivian Bernhard.  The theme is "Lewis and Clark" with a prize for the best decorated site.  Put on your buckskins, 1181, and let's come home with the winner.  Vivian needs to get reservations in soon, so please come to the May meeting prepared.

Janice Watson has agreed to chair the Club's country store booth at Hood River.  Please bring your books and other items to sell to the May meeting. Travel N Fun is full of talented craftpersons, so please also bring your woodworking, needlepoint, art or other crafts in May.  Bill and Juanita Spong will again man a flags and patches booth.

We still need hosts for the August 19-22 outing at Columbia Riverfront in Woodland and for November's dinner meeting at the Sons of Norway.  If you are interested in hosting, call Wagonmaster Chris Blankenship at 373-6416.

Chris, has already set the 2005 outing schedule:  March 17-20, Bremerton Elks park; April 15-17, American Sunset at  Westport (for the crab races); May 19-21, Puyallup Elks; June 16-17, Port Townsend Elks; July 14-16, NW Rally at Jefferson County Fairgrounds; August 18-20, Hoquim RV Park (new, on the river); September 15-17, Outback at Rochester; October 13-15; Rest-a-While at Hoodsport.

And she has set aside April 2006 to join the Puyallup Elks for their annual Daffodil Festival campout.

SUNSHINE:  Cindy Varsafsky reported on illnesses from Rosemary Achberger and Bill Varsafsky and passing of family members of Jim Munro, Joyce Cordova and Mary Morneau.  Call Cindy at 876-5841 if you know of a club member who is sick or injured or other Sunshine news.

Bill needs volunteers to cook Hamburgers on the Patio during the last three weekends in May.  Call Bill at 876-5841 to help.

The 25th anniversary committee, Dick and Stella Davis, Bud and Lorraine Maves, Gary and Sherie Lewis and Darrell and Stephanie Schmittler, is preparing for the big celebration on August 9 (2 to 7 pm).  All ex-members will be invited.  If you know the address of an ex-member who may no longer get the Reminder, please let the committee know.

Speaking of anniversaries, Wayne and Vivian will celebrate their 50th 1 to 4 pm June 26 at Scenic Beach State Park.  Club members are invited.

Once again, Al Sande has constructed a Cadillac swing set for Travel N Fun to raffle.  The swing set is in the lobby of the lodge.  Thanks very much, Al.

Tickets may be bought from any club member.  And members, raffle chairs Merle Lewis and Lorene Brannan need volunteers to sell tickets at Hamburgers on the Patio.  The drawing will be held at the Lodge's family picnic in August.

Larry Watson, our webmaster, will do the column in June and July while your editor is trekking through Alaska.  Larry provides us with a homepage on the web for the Club with the newsletter and pictures of outings online.  The latest from March's Rochester outing are at
