September Travel N Fun Report

July 14 and 15, lead by hosts Wayne and Vivian Bernhard, 16 rigs from 1181 traveled to the Hood River Fairgrounds at Odell, Oregon, for the 36th annual Northwest Elks RV Rally.  In the middle of Oregon's fruit basket, the fairground is the almost perfect place for a outing with great parking and facilities, though perhaps weather that's a bit too warm.  It's go good that we will we back in June, 2006, for a rally sponsored by the Gateway lodge from Portland.

Travel N Fun campers worked the country store, participated in games, collected raffle tickets and bonded in the shade of Al and Bea's and Joyce's awnings, sometimes with a breeze.  The country store and flag/book concessions (and CD-fish) added to the club's treasury for possible improvements to the home park or other endeavors.  A special thank you to Janice Watson and Juanita Spong and their crews for time they spent manning our booths, to the craftsmen and women who made items to sell and for our raffles, and to Roberta Harper for her beautiful flower arrangements.

The theme this year was Lewis and Clark; and Janice and Larry won best costume as "Sacagawea" and her gentleman friend.  Other 1181 winners were Al Durkee, closest to the pin; Gloria Gilchrist, second in cribbage; and a passel of raffle and door prize winners:  Larry, Dick Miller, Bea Sande, Stella Davis, Gary Blankenship, Joyce Cordova and Al Packard.

Next July, we travel to Washington's Victorian Seaport, Port Townsend, for the 37th Northwest Rally.

One hundred and eleven members and "old-timers" celebrated the 25th anniversary of Travel N Fun August 9 at the shelter.  Dan Harper, head chef, and Gary Lewis grilled salmon and chicken in the hot August sun.  The entrees were served with baked beans ala Harper, salad, garlic bread and ice tea followed by chocolate and white anniversary cakes.

President Sherie Lewis honored charter members, Alta Turner and Lorene Brannan, 20 members and past presidents.  Gary and Sherie drew for door prized provided by the Club and the Sonoma-Napa Connection.

We enjoyed communing with current and past members and wish that more could have made it.

Thanks to Sherie and her planning and invitation committee - the Schmittlers, Davis's, Maves and Gary and to all those that helped set-up, serve, run tickets, name tags, cake, drinks and prizes, clean-up and wash dishes.  Your willingness to pitch in is what makes Travel N Fun special.

August 19 to 22 found the Club at the Hoquiam River RV park, the outing hosted by the Spongs and Ann Smith.  The travelers enjoyed a spaghetti dinner prepared by the Hoquiam Elks Emerald Club, crafts, bocce ball with a twist, and the atmosphere of this great new park on the banks of the river. September 23 to 26, we return to Toppenish and the Yakama Nation RV Park. Hosts will be the Schmittlers, Josephsons and Gould’s.  Expect fun and perhaps dinner at the casino.

October 21 to 24 is the annual Officer's Outing at Rest-a-while in Hoodsport, always a favorite.  Plans are still being finalized but will likely include a catered dinner and oysters.

November's dinner meeting will be the 8th at the Sons of Norway, hosted by the Greens; and December 10, the Petersons will host our Christmas dinner at the Lodge.

SUNSHINE chairperson, Cindy Varsafsky, reported on Maxine Grevstad.

We have a full slate of officers for elections in September:  President - Sherie Lewis, Vice President - Stephanie Schmittler, Secretary - Nancy Gould, Treasurer - Ann Smith, Wagonmasters - Gary and Chris Blankenship, and Trustees - Sam Josephson and Darrell Schmittler.

The swing set, made by Al Sande, was won by the hosts at the home park. Thanks to Merle Lewis and Lorene for chairing the raffle committee.

September is our month for Hamburgers on the Patio.  There are weekends available to grill and serve.  Call Bill Varsafsky at 876-5841 if you are interested.
